2004 Focus MkII

The Ford Focus has been Britain's best-selling new car every year since 1999, and the second generation model (on sale since the end of 2004) has just strengthened its position.

The second generation was different for both markets. The North America MkII was made on the same platform as MkI and it was available only as coupe and sedan. While the International with it's new platform was totaly new car, again. In Australia the MkII is available with 2.0 L Duratec or Duratorq engines and the ST version is called XR5 Turbo.

Engines

USA MkII

The 2.0L Duratec 20 I-4 is engineered with dual overhead cams activating four valves per cylinder. For all its responsiveness, the Duratec 20 can go a long way with its EPA-estimated 35 Hwy rating.* There's also the Duratec 20E offered in states that adopt California emissions standards, qualifying Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). With both Duratec 2.0L versions, a 5-speed manual transmission is standard, with a 4-speed automatic available as an option.

INTERNATIONAL MkII

1.4 / 1.6 L DURATEC ENGINE

The 1.4 L and 1.6 L Duratec engines are upgraded Zetec-SE (Sigma codename) engines. Mazda uses this engines under MZI name.1.4 L produce 80 hp at 5700 rpm while 1.6 L produce 100 hp at 6000 rpm but they can go up an over 7000 rpm easily.Last upgrade of 1.6 L engine was in 2004 when MkII Focus went on sale, while 1.4 L was upgraded for new 2008 Ford Fiesta and produces 96 hp at 6000 rpm. Even they are based on 1998 engine, new Duratec engines look very different than 1998 Zetec-SE.1.6 L Ti-VCT is the lastest upgraded version on Zetec-SE engine, it was introduced in 2004 available with 115 hp at 6000 rpm.The Ti-VCT (Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing) version includes variable valve timing, and generates more power and torque over non-VVT counterparts. In 2007 the engine was upgraded for new Mondeo offering two versions, 110 hp and 125 hp and in 2008 for new Fiesta the 120 hp version was produced.

1.8 / 2.0 L DURATEC ENGINE

The 1.8 L and 2.0 L Duratec HE (Heavy Engine) engines are based on Mazda MZR engines. Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the old 4-cylinder Zetec engines in favor of Mazda's MZR design. Thus, 2005 and present Duratec 4-cylinder engines are made together by Ford and Mazda. European 1.8 L and 2.0 L Duratec HE engines are built at the Valencia Engine Plant in Spain. The Duratec HE is the name used by Ford of Europe for it's family of small straight-4 and V6 gasoline engines. The family includes 1.8 L and 2.0 L DOHC 16-valve engines and the 2.5 L V6 (also called the Duratec 25).

THE 1.6 L DURATORQ ENGINE

The 1.6 L Duratorq engine is a a group of compact straight-4 Diesel engines developed jointly by Ford Motor Company and the PSA Group (Peugeot/Citroën) called DLD. The Ford/PSA joint-venture for the production of the DLD was announced in September, 1998. Some of the engines are produced at Ford's Dagenham Engine plant in Dagenham, England, also at Ford's Chennai plant in India, others at PSA's Trémery plant in France. The straight-4 engines are sold under the Duratorq TDCi name by Ford, and as the HDi by Citroën and Peugeot. Mazda also uses the DLD engine in the Mazda2 and the Mazda 3, calling it the MZ-CD or CiTD.

THE 1.8 L DURATORQ ENGINE

The 1.8 L diesel engine is 100% Ford product unlike 1.6 L and 2.0 L Duratorq which are made with PSA group.This engine is from Endura engine family available since 1980s and it's available only as 1.8 litre. This lastest version still has 8 valves but now it has a common-rail technology and produces 115 hp, also it's renamed in Duratorq.

THE 2.0 L DURATORQ ENGINE

The 2.0 L Duratorq engine is just like 1.6 L made together with PSA group. Introduced in 2004 these straight-4 engines are again sold under the Duratorq TDCi name by Ford, and as the HDi by Citroën and Peugeot. An evolution of the existing DW10 engine, the new engines have a traditional belt-driven system, moving away from the chain-driven camshafts of the previous generation (Puma) TDCi engines. Both engines utilise common rail diesel technology and are the result of the fourth phase of the cooperation between PSA and Ford (initiated in 1998). Both engines utilise all-new, third-generation common rail injection systems. The 2.0 engines utilising a system from Siemens. Based on the PSA DW10 engine and with a capacity of 1997cc, this engine was developed by Peugeot engineers in France on behalf of both PSA and Ford Motor Company. Production is currently taking place in France and Skövde in Sweden. The engine was released to Ford models in 2005 Ford Focus, and followed in the 2007 Mk IV Mondeo. It features a 16-valve cylinder head with twin belt driven camshafts and utilises a variable geometry turbocharger with overboost function. An intercooler is always present, as opposed to some applications of its predecessor.In the 2005 Focus, output is a respectable 136 hp. In the 2007 Mondeo it is offered with 130 PS or 140 PS, mated to a manual or 6-speed Durashift automatic gearbox.
