This is work in progress, pictures will follow over the next few weeks

Features

The higher spec Focus Mk2 have there side repeaters fitted in to the mirror housing, but there parts are not a straight swop over as you might think. The overall shape & glass are the same, but changes have been made to the mount & fittings inside the case.

One set of Mondeo Door Mirrors

Break Down

Take the Focus Mirrors apart

Take the Mondeo Mirrors apart

Remove the mirror glass, remove the 3 Torx screws that secure the 2 parts of housing together (these are evident when the glass is removed)

Remove the electric mirror motor (3 x small torx) Unplug the wiring.

Holding the mirror baseplate, push the mirror housing backwards (imagine the mirror on the car, hit by a cyclist or something and the mirror housing pushed towards the front of the car)

You will see a securing tab. using a screwdriver, pop this out. Working round the remainder of the mirror unclips any tabs until you can remove both parts of the housing from the baseplate.


Remove the wiring from the baseplate; you may have to undo 2 x torx screws from the mounting plate to mirror assy that are behind the foam panel where the wiring comes out from.

The Focus mirror mountings are not obsolete and can be moved out of the way, you won’t need them again.

Repeat the same steps with the Mondeo Mirrors, however, at the end of dismantling you will need the mirror baseplate and mounting assy, the Mondeo covers are NOT required.


Filing & Cutting

Now, with both sets of covers side by side look at the differences. You will notice that the Mondeo covers are quite bare compared to the Focus items. You will need to cut away plastic with the Dremel to match the Mondeo covers as much as possible.

Step One You must remove any un necessary plastic from the Focus covers to match the Mondeo items. Don’t worry about the inner plastic moulding just yet.

Study the picture below to see the redundant plastic sections that you need to remove. Focus mirror on the left, Mondeo on the right.

Working carefully and a bit at a time, remove the excess plastic to look like the pic below. DONT do the first cut right up the line; leave some excess that can be sanded off bit by bit to achieve the right profile. Now do the same to the other half of the mirror End result like the top pic

Now take the MONDEO mirror assy and offer up the 2 halves of the modded Focus mirror caps.

It should be evident, from how you removed the covers as to how they fit. They WILL NOT fit flush at the moment.

Modify the Mondeo mirror assy to look like the one below.

Compare your item to the picture to mark out where you need to grind/ cut. As long as part of the lower section remains where the predrilled hole is on the bottom RH side of the unit you will be ok. This hole WILL NOT be used in final fitting. You will need to drill an additional hole in the very bottom RH lower side (or LH dependant on which side you are working on. Basically what you are looking to achieve is to secure the mondeo baseplate to the focus mirrors using 2 screws instead of 3, the remaining focus securing screw that’s left is there to join the 2 halves together without the mondeo baseplate. Again, this will become evident.

Now that you have completed all of the above, you will need to trim and cut other pieces from the mirror where required. DO NOT CUT or MODIFY any of the holes in the focus housing that help secure the focus mirror cap. There are certain tabs or plastic flanges inside the focus housing that foul the mondeo baseplate. Working round the mirror slowly and methodically, removes what you need to get the 2 halves to fit the mondeo baseplate. There are only a couple of cuts and you will need to have a good look inside the cover to see what needs to go and what needs to stay. You will be able to feel the covers fouling the inner housing and work out from there which bits to remove. Couldn’t get any decent pics though for this bit!

Where this joins the baseplate, trim some more plastic off the cover and the baseplate to achieve a flush fit. Use the Mondeo cover as a guide.

Once all the cutting and finishing is completed insert the screws to join the cover to the baseplate. Check that it all lines up ok and that it looks aesthetically correct. Take the unit apart again and prep the wiring for installation.

You have options available dependant on the trim level of your donor mirrors.

Side Indicators only, Electrical adjustable

Add and change any additional wires that you need to the MONDEO wiring assy from the donor set. Install into mirror Reassemble the mirror with all connections in place; fit the mirror to the car.

To wire in the side indicators to the car, take the BLACK wire from the ind to PIN 3 on the mondeo plug. This is earth. Take the YELLOW wire from the ind to the empty PIN 5 location on the mondeo plug.

On the door, run a separate wire from the loom side of the door - Pin 5 - to the A pillar connector. Using any of the empty pin locations, install a wire on both the door plug and the A pillar plug. Route the wire to the passenger footwell. This wire needs to goto PIN 4 on the GEM, plug C426 - BLUE

Repeat the same steps for the driver side, but take the wire to PIN 3 on C426 - BLUE/RED.

Apart from painting the skull caps to match your car, that’s pretty much it. Apologies for the lack of decent photos though, but its all trial and error to get the housings to fit, just remember to measure 3 times and CUT ONCE!
