PATS Key & Keyless Entry Programming

To program a new key

Buy a PATS key and have it cut. Using a currently working key, place it in the ignition and turn it ON until the dash lights come on. Turn the ignition off, remove key. Within 10(?)seconds, place the new key in the ignition, turn the ignition ON until the dash lights come on. Wait a few seconds for the PATS LED to stop blinking, Turn igniton off, remove key.

The new key is now programmed. This will work for up to 16 keys. After that you have to go to the dealer to have the memory reset.

For the Keyless Entry Transmitter

Up to 4 transmitters can be programmed.

Gather up ALL of the units you want to use. Find a paper clip, open it up and reform it into a U shape. Empty your glove box, deflect the sides in, and drop it all the way down toward the floor. Look at the harness behind the glove box. It runs along the cross brace. Look for a white, two pin, unterminated connector - it may be taped into the harness. This is the programming connector. Turn the ignition ON so the dash lights come on. Take your paper clip and insert it in to the two pin connector. The horn will chirp to confirm that you are in programming mode. Press any button on Transmitter #1. Horn will chirp to confirm programming. Press any button on Transmitter #2. Horn will chirp to confirm programming. Repeat for Transmitter #3 and #4 if applicable. Remove paper clip from connector. Turn igniton OFF, horn will chirp to confirm exit from programming mode.

PATS

PATS is Passive Anti-Theft System or immobilizer. It blocks engine from starting if electronically encoded transponder incorporated in key don't mach code programmed in PATS.

Remote or Keyless entry system is part of central locking/double locking/alarm system. So it has nothing to do with starting your engine.

PATS programming: Two cases: 1. Vehicles with RED master key (PATS I) 2. Vehicles without red master key (PATS II)

Ignition keys must have correct mechanical key cut for the vehicle and must be a PATS encoded key. Depending on year of your car you will have PATS I or PATS II (or no PATS at all so you do not need to program any key). I don't know at what year/month Ford switch from PATS I to PATS II (one of possible not confirmed dates is 05/98).

With red master key:

Insert RED (master) key and turn it to position II. Wait for clock led to illuminate Remove red (master) key Wait for clock let to illuminate briefly again When clock led go out, within 10 seconds insert new key and turn it to position II Wait for clock led to illuminate (stop blinking). Remove new key.

It should be programmed now, so you can test it.

Without red master key: Note: This procedure only works if two or more programmed and functional ignition keys are available and it is desired to program additional key(s). If two keys are not available you MUST go to Ford dealer (or any workshop with appropriate equipment)

It is possible to enable/disable the normal customer Spare Key Programming Procedure. If the "Spare Key Programming Switch" is not enabled you will not be able to program additional keys. This could be enabled/disabled only with appropriate equipment (it is used for company cars so no one can make extra keys)

If the programming procedure is not successful, the new key(s) will not start the vehicle and the anti-theft indicator will flash. If the programming procedure was not successful leave the ignition switch in the RUN position for at least 30 seconds, and repeat the Key Programming procedure from step 1. If the failure repeats, go to Ford dealer.

A maximum of eight ignition keys can be programmed.

If the steps are not carried out as outlined, the programming procedure will end, so you must start it again from step 1.

Insert the first programmed (functional) key and turn it from the OFF to the RUN position (maintain it in the RUN position for one second). Turn it to the OFF position and remove the first key. Within five seconds of turning the ignition to the OFF position, insert the second programmed (functional) ignition key and turn the it from the OFF to the RUN position (maintain it in the RUN position for one second). Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the second key. Within ten seconds of turning the ignition to the OFF position, insert the unprogrammed ignition key (new key) and turn it from the OFF to the RUN position (maintain it in the RUN position for less than 5 seconds). Check the new programmed key starts the engine. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position for five seconds then try to start vehicle with the new programmed key. To programme additional key(s), repeat the programming procedure from step 1.

Remote programming: Also two cases: 1. Vehicles with IR (infra red) remote 2. Vehicles with RF (radio frequency) remote For keys description go to http://www.mirez.co.uk/Keys.htm

A maximum of four keyless entry remote transmitters can be programmed. Programming must be done at the same time for all the transmitters. First verify that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped). Above apply to both IR and RF.

IR

Close all doors and fasten the safety belts to make sure conflicting chimes do not sound during programming. Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II at least four times in six seconds. Turn the ignition switch to position I. The central security module (CSM) is now in the learning mode. Press and hold one of the buttons on the remote transmitter until a chime sounds. This indicates a new transmitter code has successfully received. After each successful programming, another 10 second learning mode is automatically entered, up to a maximum of four times. To program additional transmitters, repeat step 5. The system will leave the learning mode after the ignition switch is turned to position III, or if no new transmitter is programmed during the 10 seconds, or if four remote transmitters have been programmed. Note: An incorrect programming procedure does not affect the stored codes. After successful programming, only the new programmed transmitters will be accepted.

RF

Turn the ignition switch from the OFF to the ON position four times within three seconds to enter the learning mode. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. The central security module will remain in the learning mode for 20 seconds indicated by the LED in the instrument panel being illuminated continuously. Press any button on the remote transmitter being programmed. When the signal from the remote transmitter, is accepted by the central security module, the LED will flash. To program additional transmitters, repeat step 3, with a 2 second delay after the LED flashes. To exit the learning mode, turn the ignition switch to the ON position. If no transmitter signal is received by the central security module for 20 seconds, the system will automatically exit the learning mode.

Update for PATS II

You can remove all keys except two from PATS, so only these two keys will start your car. Useful if you bye used car and get two keys, but you are not sure how much of them previous owner(s) have.

All timings are the same as in normal programming:

Place 1st key in ignition and turn to position 2. Remove key and Place 2nd key in ignition and turn to position 2. Remove key (The key coding mode has now been activated)

Normally you would put your new key in and it would code it the same as the other two, but now,

Place 2nd key in ignition, and turn to position 2. Remove key and Place 1st key in ignition, and turn to position 2.

All other keys (apart from 1st and 2nd key) will now not be accepted by your Mondy.
