Early Mk3 Mondeos built up to August 2002 have an automatic adjustment mechanism on the handbrake lever assembly. This turned out to be problematic, so later Mk3s have a manual adjuster on the handbrake cable equalizer.

Automatic adjuster parts are no longer available, and new manual-adjust handbrake cables are 30mm shorter than the old auto-adjust cables.

If you want to replace the cables on a vehicle with an auto-adjust lever, you will also need to replace the lever assembly with a new manual-adjust lever.

However, if you want to replace an auto-adjust lever with a manual-adjust one, you can reuse the old cables.
