Modifying a Wikipedia page

Wiki Mark-Up

The Wiki editor uses a specialized form of mark-up to create links, headers, lists, and other display items. The best way to learn the mark-up is to edit current articles. By looking at the source, you will gain knowledge by example. Here is a rundown of mark-up codes you will find useful while editing and creating articles.

Level 2 Header
Level 3 Header
Level 4 Header
Creating Lists

* Item One in a bulleted list
* Item Two in a bulleted list

# Item One in a numbered list
# Item Two in a numbered list
## Item Two (sub One) in a numbered list
## Item Two (sub Two) in a numbered list
#* Item Two (sub Three) in a numbered list (with bullet)

  • Item One in a bulleted list
  • Item Two in a bulleted list
  1. Item One in a numbered list
  2. Item Two in a numbered list
    1. Item Two (sub One) in a numbered list
    2. Item Two (sub Two) in a numbered list
    • Item Two (sub Three) in a numbered list (with bullet)

Definition List

; Definition list : list of definitions ; item : the item's definition

One item per line, NEWLINE only before the colon. The space before the colon improves parsing.
Definition list
list of definitions
item
the item's definition

Indentation

: A colon indents a line or paragraph. A manual newline starts a new paragraph.

A colon indents a line or paragraph.

A manual newline starts a new paragraph.

  • This is primarily for displayed material, but is also used for discussion on Talk pages.

Emphasis

The characters below are all single quotation marks. None are double quotation marks.

Emphasis One (two quotation marks)
Emphasis Two (three quotation marks)
Emphasis Three (five quotation marks)

Emphasis Three

Internal Wiki Links

Links to internal pages use the following mark-up:

LinkText
Example: My corps is awesome!

LinkText can be left out:

Example: The Cadets are awesome!

My corps is awesome!

The Cadets are awesome!

External Web Links

Links to external websites use the following mark-up:

[URL LinkText]
Example: The Blue Devils are awesome!

Please use external links sparingly. In general they should only be used under an "external links" heading at the bottom of an article. LinkText can be left out, in which case the link will be displayed as a footnote. This technique is not recommended.

The Blue Devils are awesome!
